A world laid over our own
Somewhere between 400 BC and 400 AD, the map of a great continent became an empire. Fifty kingdoms and the free city of Columbara keep their own patrons, festivals and pride. Their towns stand where real towns stand, their roads follow real roads, and their rivers run in their true beds, all under ancient names.
You see it from above, like the great adventure games: you walk out of your door, down the lane and onto the open road. Inside a town the streets are full size. Out in the wild, a day's walk carries you across the hills.
The seven arts
Every person in the world follows one of the seven liberal arts. Each art is a calling, and every calling is a hero: no class only talks, and anyone can pick up a knife, a sword, a staff, a sling or a bow. But nobody fights like the art that was born to it.
Grammaticus
the temple healer and keeper of true names
Word of Power · Bless · Mend wounds
Heals the band and speaks the names the restless dead fear.
Dialecticus
the sage of proofs and wards
Bolt of force · Ward · Spot a flaw
Ends a fight with one exact word, and sees through every lie.
Rhetor
the oath-sworn soldier
Oath strike · Shield ally · Rally
Holds the front line with sword and shield, and keeps the band standing.
Logistes
the fox of counts and locks
Sneak attack · Disarm traps · Appraise
Strikes from the shadows, opens what is shut, and finds the best price.
Mechanicus
the maker of machines
Hammer blow · Barricade · Constructs
Builds bridges, breaks walls, and commands a workshop of bronze helpers.
Musicus
the singer of war songs
War song · Song of courage · Sling
Makes foes falter and friends brave, then puts the lyre away and slings a stone.
Peregrinus
the guide who reads the stars
Aimed shot · Scout ahead · Track
Never lost, never surprised, and deadly with a bow at long range.
How you play
Pick a kingdom and a plot
Choose a kingdom on the old map, then a city, then your plot of ground. Your house stands there for good. The land your plot is on gives your people a small gift of its heritage.
Raise a hero
Choose a calling, a name and a look. Your hero starts with a plain kit and a knife, as everyone did in those days, and steps out of the door into the lane.
Gather a band of seven
Meet the people of the land in the inns and markets: one for each art. A healer, a sage, a captain, a fox, a maker, a singer and a guide. Together you are far stronger than any one of you.
Walk the empire
Trade the goods each county makes, haul a cart from town to town, cross fords and ferries, and face what waits in the wild. Danger grows with distance from the safe roads.
Grow old, and pass it on
Your people age. The young hit hardest; the old know the most. An old Mechanicus commands a workshop of machines; an old captain holds the line by will alone. Elders teach your heirs, and your house goes on.
The world is alive
Real events become the empire's news. A bill in the real world is read as a decree in the forum; a real storm or flood becomes an omen the augurs must read; a real grant becomes an Imperial boon the whole empire works on together. Every one of them is a quest.
Imperial boons open now
After the Sea-Storm
A great storm drove in from the sea and tore at the harbors of Floridis.
The Whirlwind's Path
A whirlwind tore a path across Wisconsa.
When the River Rose
The river rose over its banks in Deseretia, and the low fields are mud.
